Abstract :Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are among the most significant technologies in Geography and Social Studies education. The revised BİLSEM curricula under the TYMM framework include specific learning outcomes related to GIS. This study designed and implemented a workshop program to ensure the effective and accurate integration of GIS into Geography and Social Studies teaching within the TYMM scope. It also examined the program’s impact on teachers’ perceptions of the advantages and limitations of GIS. The study employed a weak experimental design using a single-group pre-test/post-test model. Participants included 37 Geography and Social Studies teachers working in BİLSEM institutions in İzmir. The workshop, aligned with the pedagogical approach of the updated curricula, aimed to support accurate and effective GIS integration. Data were collected using a scale adapted into Turkish by Artvinli (2009) to assess teachers’ views on GIS applications. The data were analyzed with the Paired Samples T-Test and Wilcoxon Signed-Ranks Test, and item distributions were compared between pre- and post-workshop results. Findings revealed that the workshop strengthened teachers’ focus on the educational advantages of GIS rather than its limitations. To maximize the educational value of GIS, instructional content should be contextualized with topics linked to students’ local environments, following principles such as progressing from near to distant and from concrete to abstract. Furthermore, GIS activities should extend beyond demonstrations to develop higher-order cognitive skills. Continuous in-service GIS training for teachers is also recommended to ensure effective and sustainable classroom integration.
