THROUGH THE EYES OF UNIVERSITY STUDENTS: FACTORS CAUSING ACADEMIC WRITER’S BLOCK IN EFL CONTEXT AND SUGGESTED SOLUTIONS

Abstract :The present study aims to explore the factors contributing to writer’s block and investigate perceived solutions to overcome these difficulties proposed by English as Foreign Language university students. In this line, the study employs explanatory sequential mixed-methods design. Quantitative data were collected via Writer’s Block Scale (N=187) while qualitative insights of the participants were obtained through semi-structured interviews (N=20). Descriptive statistical analysis showed that fear of criticism, procrastination, motivational challenges, and perfectionism are factors creating writer’s block. The study identifies five main sources of writer’s block based on thematic content analysis of qualitative data as vocabulary and grammar issues, lack of information and resource limitations, difficulties in the writing process, motivational and psychological barriers, and insufficient planning. As proposed solutions for these sources, six categories were revealed as a result of qualitative data analysis including consistent practice, reading and knowledge enhancement, psychological and motivational support, planning and prewriting strategies, feedback and evaluation, and grammar and structural development. The findings contribute to a deeper understanding of multifaceted factors underlying writer’s block among EFL students.
