Les soignants missionnaires en Algérie pendant la colonisation: Entre soins et activités apostoliques des Pères Blancs

Abstract :Abstract in English: From the beginning of the colonization of Algeria, several religious congregations followed the African Army with the aim of evangelizing the African populations. Archbishop Lavigerie will create the Missionary Order of the White Fathers whose missionaries will have the task of taking care of hundreds of orphans who will be brought up in the Christian faith, as well as providing free care to the destitute `natives` in hospitals run by white fathers. Through these ‘’ Catholic hospitals ’, the White Fathers helped to establish Christianity, but their mission came up against an Islam deeply rooted in the population. Nevertheless, in the field of health, they were agents of the introduction of modern medicine, without being able to convert the Muslim populations either to the Christian religion or to `Western civilization`. Résumé en Français Dès le début de la colonisation de l’Algérie, plusieurs congrégations religieuses ont suivi l’armée d’Afrique dans le but d’évangéliser les populations africaines. L’archevêque Lavigerie créera l`Ordre missionnaire des Pères Blancs dont les missionnaires auront pour tache de prendre en charge des centaines d’orphelins qui seront élevés dans la foi chrétienne, ainsi que d’assurer des soins gratuits « aux indigènes » démunis dans des hôpitaux gérés par les pères blancs. A travers ces ‘’hôpitaux catholiques’’, les Pères Blancs contribuèrent à implanter la chrétienté mais leur mission s’est heurtée à un Islam profondément enraciné dans la population. Néanmoins , dans le domaine de la santé , ils furent, des agents de l’introduction de la médecine moderne, sans pouvoir pour autant convertir les populations musulmanes ni à la religion chrétienne ni à la « civilisation occidentale»
