Comparison of the Effects of Sheep Manure and Vermicompost Applications on the Yield of Einkorn Wheat (Triticum monococcum L.)

Abstract :Einkorn wheat (Triticum monococcum L.), one of the earliest domesticated wheat species, is an important part of Türkiye’s cultural heritage due to its high nutritional value, resistance to harsh climatic conditions, and strong husk structure, which provides resistance to pests and diseases. Generally, einkorn wheat is cultivated using organic farming methods without commercial fertilizers. However, there are limited scientific studies in Türkiye regarding whether einkorn wheat has a fertilization requirement. Therefore, this study aims not only to contribute to the research on the effects of fertilization on the yield of einkorn wheat but also to promote the sustainability of organic farming methods. In this study, the effects of equal doses of sheep manure and vermicompost applications on the yield of einkorn wheat were compared under open-air conditions in pots. Agricultural data, including heading and maturation period, plant and spike height, and number of grains per spike, were determined for einkorn wheat. The agricultural data obtained were statistically evaluated using one-way ANOVA. As a result of the morphological evaluations, the vermicompost group showed higher average values in terms of heading and maturation period, plant and spike height, and number of grains per spike compared to the sheep manure and control groups. Statistical analyses revealed a significant difference between the groups (P<0.01). The results of the study suggest that the use of vermicompost could yield positive outcomes in improving soil and einkorn wheat productivity.
