Abstract :This article provides a critical assessment of distance learning as an alternative to face to face learning. It is argued in this article that language has got various functions and that these functions determine the language learner’s attitude and social communication as well as the meanings of linguistic items. It further asserts that these functions can be attained only in the context that learner and teacher share the same time and place.
