Teacher Perspectives on the Contemporary Life Studies Curriculum in Northern Cyprus

Abstract :This qualitative study explores classroom teachers’ perspectives on the 2016 Life Studies Curriculum implemented in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC). The research aims to evaluate the functionality, applicability, and challenges of the curriculum through teacher experiences and insights. Data were collected from primary school teachers using semi-structured interviews and were analyzed through content analysis. Findings revealed that while the curriculum is generally perceived positively particularly in its structured and student-centered design teachers also identified significant limitations. These include a lack of alignment between textbooks and the curriculum, insufficient content related to national values and cultural events, abstract and developmentally inappropriate topics, and a scarcity of educational materials and technology. Moreover, the study highlights a predominance of traditional teaching practices due to these systemic shortcomings. Teachers expressed a strong need for curriculum revisions that prioritize practical, value-oriented, and interdisciplinary learning. Their suggestions included the incorporation of contemporary themes (e.g., environmental awareness, technology, space science), the development of visually enriched and activity-based textbooks, and the expansion of professional development opportunities. Overall, the study concludes that ensuring coherence among curriculum, textbooks, and classroom practice along with improved teacher support and contextual adaptation would significantly enhance the effectiveness of the Life Studies course in the TRNC education system.
