COMPARISON OF INDIVIDUALS WITH MIGRAINE AND TENSION-TYPE HEADACHE IN TERMS OF PAIN, PHYSICAL ACTIVITY LEVEL AND TEMPOROMANDIBULAR DISORDER SEVERITY

Abstract :Objective: The aim of this study was to compare individuals with migraine and tension-type headache (TTH) in terms of pain, physical activity level and severity of temporomandibular disorder. Method: Individuals (n=48) between the ages of 18 and 45 who participated in the study were divided into two groups by being diagnosed with migraine or TTH by a neurologist. Pain severity was evaluated with the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), headache impact level with the Headache Impact Test (HIT-6), Pressure-Pain Threshold (PPT) with the J-Tech Digital Algometer device, physical activity level with the International Physical Activity Questionnaire-Short Form (IPAQ-SF), and temporomandibular disorder severity with the Fonseca Anamnestic Index (FAI). Results: There was no statistically significant difference in headache severity between individuals diagnosed with migraine and TTH (p>0.05). PPT measurement values of the trapezius and suboccipital muscles evaluated bilaterally did not show a statistically significant difference between the two groups (p>0.05). The average HIT-6 score of individuals diagnosed with migraine was found to be higher than individuals with TTH (p=0.003). The temporomandibular disorder severity level of individuals diagnosed with migraine was found to be higher than individuals diagnosed with TTH (p=0.002). There was no statistically significant difference between the groups in terms of physical activity level (p>0.05). Conclusion: These findings highlight the importance of a holistic approach to headache management, addressing both primary symptoms and comorbid conditions, to improve patient outcomes. Determination of headache impact level and temporomandibular disorder severity in individuals with migraine and TTH may help physiotherapists to achieve optimal results, and may contribute to the development of proactive approaches to headache.
