Abstract :This study provides a comprehensive examination of Kara Yūsuf, the true founder and one of the most significant rulers of the Qara Qoyunlu State, with respect to his military, political, and cultural aspects. Renowned for his success in warfare, disciplined army structure, and ability to exploit the weaknesses of his adversaries, Kara Yūsuf emerged as a prominent figure in both Turkmen history and the medieval Islamic world. He was perceived as a serious threat even by Timur, one of the most powerful rulers of the era. Beyond his military prowess, Kara Yūsuf distinguished himself through a governance approach grounded in justice and compassion. A considerable portion of the negative portrayals of his character is closely linked to the political rivalries and sectarian divisions of the time. His religious tolerance, support for the translation of the Qur’an into Turkish, and patronage of the arts reveal the multifaceted nature of his personality and his qualities as a statesman. Accordingly, this study aims to demonstrate that Kara Yūsuf was not merely a warrior but also a just ruler and a culturally influential leader.
