Does Sporting Success Affect Financial Performance? Evidence from the Turkish Super League

Abstract :Football has become a significant branch of the world’s largest sports industry. It has been observed that clubs, which have transformed into more institutional structures under the influence of globalisation and competition and are now striving to create their economic values, have recently developed a significantly large economic structure. Therefore, it is essential to investigate the relationship between the effective management of football clubs and their sporting success and financial performance. This study aims to analyse the relationship between the sporting success and financial performance of four major football clubs (Fenerbahçe, Galatasaray, Beşiktaş and Trabzonspor) listed on Borsa Istanbul between 2014 and 2023. For this purpose, the study employed CRITIC-based MABAC methods for evaluating financial performance, and correlation analysis was used to determine the relationship between sporting success and financial performance. According to the results of the study, it was concluded that sporting success has a positive effect on financial performance.
