Abstract :This paper aims to uncover how a disaster in a neighbouring country, namely, Greece, is represented in Turkish online media through translation. To this end, analysis was conducted on 12 selected pairs of news articles in English and Turkish from 4 different media outlets- BBC News, Euronews, CNN, and The Independent. Headlines, as paratextual instruments, were examined quantitatively and qualitatively based on an attitudinal perspective of the Appraisal Theory (Martin & White, 2005). Shifts in attitudinal meanings in both languages were analysed under three subsystems of Attitude- affect, judgement, and appreciation. The quantitative analysis revealed only a slight difference between the two languages, but the comparative qualitative analysis disclosed much greater shifts in attitudinal meanings. The translated news headlines intensified the emotional response under the category of affect, and the cultural and aesthetic value was observed to be mitigated in appreciation. Judgement, on the other hand, was observed to be triggered by ideological motivations. Furthermore, consistency was detected across the two languages, as governmental power was given intensified emphasis. The results show that the shifts in meanings are not always designed to support objectivity; rather, their impact might depend on the broader socio-political and economic context in which the translation occurs. Keywords : haber çevirisi, yanmetinsel analiz, değerlendirme kuramı, tutumsal anlam
