Bibliometric Analysis Using VOSviewer of Studies on the Concept of Social Media Use in Disaster or Crisis Situations

Abstract :The aim of this study is to map studies on \\\"social media use in disaster or crisis situations.\\\" Bibliometric analysis was used to identify research trends and gaps related to the concept. Bibliometric data from various types of works published between 1993 and 2025, scanned in the Web of Science database, was used as the basis. When examining the distribution of 379 works on social media usage in disaster or crisis situations by publication year, the highest concentration was observed in 2020 (48 works), 2022 (46 works) and 2021 (33 works); the authors with the highest number of works were Imran Muhammed, Liu Brooke Fisher and Ngamassi Louis; the publication type is predominantly journal articles (275), conference abstracts (77) and review articles (25); in terms of research areas, works were published in computer science (115), engineering (57), communication (48), geology (41) and water resources (39); the distribution of publications by country shows that the United States (142), Australia (37) and China (27) are the leading countries of origin; publications were mainly in English (369), followed by Spanish (3) and Russian (2). When examining the most frequently used keywords in publications related to social media usage during disasters or crises, the terms social media (148), Twitter (41), disaster management (40), crisis communication (34), and disaster (27) are at the forefront. Contributing to the local literature on the use of social media in disaster and crisis management is important for presenting information on this subject.
