Abstract :The article aims to find sound approaches to tackling the challenges related to the lagging development of rural areas and their spatial compression due to the outflow of the most active rural population. For this purpose, the author perform an analysis of the experience accumulated by the EU countries, the USA, “Russia and Türkiye and come to the conclusion that any sectoral and redistributive approaches to managing the sustainable development of rural areas are ineffective and can only be considered as complementary to the territorial approach, which is based on the development of competitive advantages of the rural areas. The author consider such components of the territorial approach as the establishment of a hierarchical system of supporting rural settlements and the involvement of local communities in the development of rural areas.
