Abstract :This case study tries to pinpoint the English language requirements of students studying in Turkish universities’ theology faculties. Methods for collecting qualitative data were used in the study. 15 students from theology departments were interviewed for the data. The findings showed that the students’ English language requirements varied depending on their academic standing and that they understood the value of having proficiency in the language for academic activities including reading and writing academic materials and taking part in academic conversations. The results also showed the importance of English language skills for potential future careers, particularly for individuals planning to work in interfaith dialogue and international religious organizations. Based on the findings, the study advises adding English for Specific Purposes (ESP) courses to theology faculties’ curricula in order to better serve students’ English language needs. The study adds to the body of knowledge on the English language requirements for students studying theology and offers guidance to administrators and faculty on how to enhance the English language instruction provided to their students.
Keywords : English language needs, theology faculty students, English for Specific Purposes (ESP), career opportunities, interfaith dialogue
