Abstract :This study aims to measure and evaluate the efficiency in the cinema sector using a multi- criteria Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) methodology. Based on multiple inputs and multiple outputs, Academy Award for best picture nominees of the last fourteen years are taken as decision-making units and compared by using the data envelopment analysis technique. For each decision-making unit, budget of the movie, the reputation and the previous successes of the first two leading stars, director and the screen-writer are considered as inputs. To evaluate the success, the number of awards won before the movie is used. Also, Google-trends search score for each of them are used for estimating their reputation. Internet Movie Database (IMDb) rating, number of IMDb votes, box-office for both cumulative worldwide gross and opening weekend USA, Metascore and Google-trends search score for the movie, the number of Oscars won by the movie are taken as outputs. To investigate the relevance of each input and output, they were examined by correlation analysis. Input oriented data envelopment analysis technique was used and according to the results, recommendations were given for improving productivity to the DMUs which are not efficient enough in preference to their reference clusters.
