Abstract :The aim of the study [1] was to compare the effect of verbal motivation on test performance in the pulmonary function test applied to the athlete group and the sedentary group, and the aim of the study [2] was to compare the effect of repeated measurements without motivation, with verbal motivation before starting the test and with verbal motivation during the test on pulmonary function test within the groups. A total of 57 male subjects [athletes (n=31), sedentary (n=27)] aged 18-25 years participated in the study. Pulmonary function test, which determines dynamic lung volume with a spirometer, was performed on different days. The tests were repeated 3 times for each participant without any verbal motivation (WVM), with verbal motivation before starting the test (BVM) and with verbal motivation during the test (DVM). In the analysis of the data, two-way ANOVA test for repeated measures was used to examine the results of different protocols (WVM, BVM, DVM). When the study findings were examined, statistically significant differences were found between WVM and BVM measurements and between BVM and DVM measurements in FVC and PEF parameters in both groups. In the FEV1 and FEV1/FVC parameters, a statistically significant difference was found between the WVM and BVM measurements and between the BVM and DVM measurements only in the sedentary group. In the FVC parameter, a higher improvement was found in favor of the athlete group in all WVM, BVM and DVM measurements. In conclusion, verbal motivation during the test was found to be effective in pulmonary function test used to determine lung volume and capacity, which are important markers for high sportive performance. It can be said that continuous feedback and encouragement from the environment may be important factors affecting the test parameters, especially in measurement tests with protocols such as respiratory tests.
