Examination Of Teacher Candidates` Opinios On Elective Courses In The Social Studies Undergraduate Program

Abstract :The aim of this study is to reveal the opinions of pre-service teachers about the elective courses in the Social Studies Teaching Undergraduate Program. The study was carried out with the qualitative research method and the case study pattern was used. The study group of the research consists of 4th grade teacher candidates studying at Erzincan Binali Yıldırım University, Faculty of Education, Department of Social Studies Teaching. While determining the study group, easily accessible case sampling, one of the purposeful sampling methods, was used. Research data were obtained through focus group interviews and the data were analyzed using descriptive analysis method. While preparing the research questions, a literature review was made and studies on the subject were examined. In addition, expert opinion was taken and a pilot study was conducted with 3rd grade social studies teacher candidates. According to the data obtained after the main interview, the pre-service teachers stated that they preferred the elective courses because they were easy courses, they included lecturers, useful information, and they were courses that fit their interests. In addition, it was stated that it would be beneficial to increase the number of courses in the elective course groups, to increase the course quotas, and to include lecturers with expertise in the courses. It was stated that elective course groups in education faculties should include more courses in the fields of science, art, culture, technology and language education.Keywords : Sosyal bilgiler, öğretmen adayları, lisans programı, seçmeli dersler, Social studies, candidate teachers, undergraduate program, elective courses
