Prediction of Social Studies Teachers’ Media Literacy Competencies and Critical Thinking Tendencies

Abstract :The purpose of this research is to examine the relationship between social studies teachers\\\' media literacy competencies and critical thinking tendencies with various variables. In this regard, the population of the research was planned to include 354 social studies teachers working in educational institutions affiliated with the Ministry of National Education in Ordu province, and the scales were applied to 109 teachers. Descriptive and predictive statistical processes were used to analyze the data. One-way analysis of variance and independent groups t test were applied to determine whether teachers\\\' media literacy competencies and critical thinking tendencies differ in terms of gender, professional seniority, graduated program, educational background, and participation in in-service training. Pearson Correlation coefficient was applied to test a relationship between media literacy competencies and critical thinking tendencies. In the findings, a significant difference was found between teachers\\\' media literacy competencies and their critical thinking tendencies. The relationship between media literacy competencies and critical thinking tendencies is a high level, positive and significant relationship. One of the suggestions that can be made is to include teaching methods and techniques that reflect critical thinking skills and tendencies more frequently in the social studies teacher preperation programs.
