SEROPREVALENCE OF TRANSFUSION TRANSMISSIBLE INFECTIONS IN BLOOD DONORS OF A NEWLY ESTABLISHED TERTIARY CARE TEACHING HOSPITAL NEAR SUNDARBAN REGION OF WEST BENGAL

Abstract :Objective – To study the socio-demographic profile of blood donors and to determine the seroprevalence of transfusion transmissible infections insert ignore into journalissuearticles values(TTIs); among them. Materials and methods – It is a retrospective cross-sectional study for 3 years from January 2020 to December 2022. Records of the blood donors were collected from the blood bank of a tertiary care teaching hospital and were analyzed through epi info7 to find out the seroprevalence of TTIs. Results – Among the donors majority were male insert ignore into journalissuearticles values(76.74%); and 1.11% were found to be seropositive for TTIs. Seroprevalence was highest for hepatitis B insert ignore into journalissuearticles values(0.72%); followed by hepatitis C insert ignore into journalissuearticles values(0.18%);, syphilis insert ignore into journalissuearticles values(0.13%); and least for human immunodeficiency virus insert ignore into journalissuearticles values(0.08%);; however, no donor was found to be positive for malaria. Seropositivity was highest among the age group of 31-40 years of age insert ignore into journalissuearticles values(47.12%);. Conclusion – Increase in public awareness regarding voluntary blood donation, meticulous donor screening and regular use of highly sensitive tests are essential to reduce the risk of TTIs.
