Abstract :In an anarchic international system, states form alliances to feel secure. These alliances are made to balance their power or to prevent the emergence of a hegemonic power. The balance that has been struck brings with it a debate as to whether it paves the way for war or peace. That’s why it is important to examine the relationship between alliances and wars. In the literature, there is a dichotomy in the relationship between wars and alliances. The question of whether alliances prevent or cause war forms the basis of this fundamental distinction. Realists argue that alliances prevent by maintaining the balance of power, thereby ensuring peace. liberals claim alliances cause wars by increasing the risk of conflict and spreading disputes. This study examines this debate in the literature through the example of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, is seen as a threat by Finland and Sweden, bringing the two countries closer to NATO membership than ever before. Keywords : NATO, Güç dengesi, Realizm, Liberalizm, İttifak
