Abstract :Lumbar spinal stenosis, the result of congenital and degenerative constriction of the neu¬ral canal and foramina leading to lumbosacral nerve root or cauda equina compression, is a common cause of disability in middle-aged and elderly patients. Although nonoperative treatment may be successful initially, surgical decompression should be done in patients with serious or progressive pain or neurologic dysfunction. Early diagnosis and treatment of spinal stenosis may prevent intractable pain and the permanent neurologic sequale of chronic nerve entrapment. Yaşlı ve orta yaşlılarda ağrı ve sakatlığın en yaygın sebeplerinden birisi olan lomber spinal stenoz konjenital veya edinsel olarak santral spinal kanal veya foraminaların lumbosakral sinir köklerini veya kauda ekinayı sıkıştıracak ölçüde daralmasıdır. Başlangıç aşamasında konservatif tedavi başarılı olsa bile, ilerleyici ağrısı ve nörolojik defısiü olanlarda cerrahi te-davi geciktirilmemelidir. Spinal stenozun erken tanı ve tedavisi hastaların şiddetli ağrıdan ve kronik sinir basısının nörolojik sekellerinden korunmasında son derece önemlidir.
