Abstract :Scleroderma and Gastrointestinal System The gastrointestinal tract is commonly involved in scleroderma. The esophagus is the most frequently affected, followed by the anorectal region, the small bowel, stomach and colon. Liver disease is only rarely reported. Smootti muscle athropy leads to a loss of of esophageal peristalsis, a defect of the lower esopageal sphincter, and gastric hypomotility, thus predisposing to severe reflux esophagitis. The gastroenterologist will have to focus on rational diagnosis of esophageal involvement, is may lead to long-term Ürerapeutic consequnces. Anorectel involvoment is commonly involved, witìi a prevelance 50%-70% small bowel and colon involvomentare reported to 50% of patients. This article is to describe the clinical syptoms, pathophysiology, diagnosis and management of gasü~ointestmal disease in scleroderma.
