Abstract :In this study, Salvia fruticosa Mill. seeds were collected from different locations in west and south-west Anatolia, Turkey, to establish a population. This population was grown under the Bornova ecological conditions for determination of agronomical and technological traits in order to develop a standard variety by selecting the types with better quality and yield using the clonal selection method. The population included the seeds collected from seventeen different locations in the provinces of Muğla, Antalya, İzmir, Aydın, Tekirdağ, Çanakkale and Balıkesir. Plant height, the yields of fresh herbage, drug herbage, drug leaf and essential oil content for each population in the different locations were studied and a total of 66 single plants were selected. The A clones were established with these 66 plants. The average plant height, fresh herbage yield, drug herbage yield, drug leaf yield and essential oil content were 46.4 cm, 1433.0 g/plot, 578.2 g/plot, 361.5 g/plot and 3.68%, respectively, in the A clones. 1,8-Cineol, the most important component of essential oil content, ranged from 15.96 to 75.50% among the A clones. In light of the results, it was concluded that there was a sufficient variability for the traits studied in these populations, and effective selection could be carried out in the desired direction using the present variability.
