Abstract :The European Union has a variety of mechanisms for contributing to the peaceful resolution of disputes. In this article, I leave traditional tools such as diplomacy, or peacekeeping aside and identify the mechanisms it uses for the accession countries. I argue that the European Union uses four mechanisms of conditionalities, direct imposition, connecting, and legitimizing to contribute to the peaceful resolution of disputes. By discussing the effectiveness of these four mechanisms based on case studies in the Western Balkans and Turkey, I argue that although the European Union may achieve more rapid and concrete results with conditionalities, direct imposition, and to a lesser degree with legitimizing; a long-lasting contribution to the peace can only be secured through connecting. However, connecting mechanism is the most difficult to implement and also to measure, as it involves long-term transformation.
