Abstract :Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the incidence of alveolitis, one of the postoperative complications of tooth extraction, and the etiological factors that may cause alveolitis. Material and Methods: This retrospective study included patients who applied to oral and maxillofacial surgery clinic with complaints of pain after tooth extraction and were diagnosed with alveolitis and filled out the alveolitis form completely. Alveolitis cases were evaluated according to variables such as gender, age, extraction reasons, extraction region, presence of systemic disease, smoking and alcohol consumption. Results: Two hundred patients, 122 female and 78 male, were included in the study. Alveolitis cases were detected more in primary school graduates. There was a statistically significant relationship between systemic diseases and alveolitis (p=0.001). It was observed that pain started mostly on the 2nd day after extraction. When the distribution of extracted tooth numbers was examined, it was seen that the most extracted tooth numbers were 38 (20%), 36 (15%) and 46 (11%). It was determined that the most common reason for tooth extraction in alveolitis cases was tooth caries (45%), 67.5% of the extractions took a long time, 72% of the patients were smokers and 23.5% of them consumed alcohol. Conclusion: It was determined that alveolitis was more common in women, patients aged 58 and over, and in the posterior region of mandible after tooth extraction. Traumatic extraction, smoking and alcohol consumption, and poor oral hygiene were found to have a significant effect in predisposing individuals to alveolitis.
