An Investigation of the Knowledge Levels of Pre-service Science Teachers on Laboratory Safety

Abstract :The present study aimed to determine the level of knowledge hold by pre-service science teachers about laboratory safety. 50 pre-service teachers participated in the study. The study employed a basic qualitative research design and data were collected through a questionnaire comprising 12 items. The items were written as scenarios and two answer choices were presented for each item. The participants were asked to mark one of these choices and explain the rationale for their answers. The data were analyzed using the descriptive analysis technique and the participant responses for each scenario were divided into four categories: (a) correct answer with correct justification, (b) correct answer with partially correct justification, (c) correct answer with incorrect justification, and (d) incorrect answer. The results revealed that the participants generally provided correct responses to the items, but they did not justify their answers accurately.Keywords : Laboratory safety, level of knowledge, pre-service science teachers
